I am a Heritage Specialist with the Heritage Council and I have a programme that brings Irish history to life through theatre and storytelling.
As a writer and performer, I have created an original piece of immersive theatre titled "Nora’s Tenement Life: Ireland, 1920s". This performance invites students to step into the world of Nora, a spirited woman living with her five children and their cat in a tenement house in Dublin at the dawn of the Irish Free State. Through Nora’s story, your students will gain a vivid glimpse into the daily lives, struggles, and resilience of ordinary people during this transformative period in Irish history.
The piece is designed to be interactive and age-appropriate, ensuring that all students, from younger children to senior classes, can enjoy and engage with the performance. For the younger audience, the storytelling incorporates humour, lively characters, and a bit of fun – especially with the antics of Nora’s cat!! For older students, the piece delves deeper into the social and historical context, encouraging them to reflect on Ireland’s past and its relevance today.
The performance lasts 30 minutes (with 10 minutes preparation) for younger students and 35 minutes (with 10 minutes preparation) for older students. It can be moved from one class to another throughout the day if a designated room is not available. As an immersive experience, it will not only entertain but also provoke thought and discussion, aligning perfectly with subjects such as history, social studies, and drama. A workshop element can be added if desired.
I would enjoy the opportunity to visit and share this heritage experience with your students. I believe it will enhance their understanding of our shared history and provide a fresh perspective on Ireland’s past.
